So, what type of exercise do you do?

A lot of people focus on cardio training for their workouts. That’s great! However, it’s a one-sided approach that won’t necessarily give you all the benefits you’re seeking. If you’re the cardio queen (or king) but don’t do weight training, I highly recommend you start adding strength or resistance training to your workout sessions.

Here are just some of the ways that strength training can improve your overall health and fitness level:

  1. It can help with weight loss and increase your lean muscle mass (but ladies don’t worry, you won’t look like a bodybuilder – that’s a whole different type of training!).
  2. It can increase your bone density, which is VERY important as we get older.
  3. It can improve your balance, coordination, posture, and flexibility.
  4. It can help to reduce the risk of falls.
  5. It can help with the management of Type-2 Diabetes and arthritis.
  6. It can increase the caloric burn both during and after your workout when you are at rest.
  7. It can improve your mood and brain function.
  8. And of course, it can increase your strength so you can do your daily tasks and enjoy your favorite activities.

You don’t have to spend an hour four days a week doing this type of training either. Just starting with 20-30 minutes of strength training 2-3 times a week can reap significant benefits.

If you’re not doing some type of strength or resistance training, I would recommend incorporating it into your weekly schedule, as long as your physician gives you their approval.
