Let’s Talk About the Scale
December 15, 2019

Let’s talk about the scale. Some days you like what it is showing you and other days, not so much!

My opinion? In conjunction with other tools, using a scale has its place in determining how you’re progressing. However, I don’t recommend using the scale as your only source of feedback.

Your weight will fluctuate day to day and even within the same day. Causes for that may be increased sodium intake, a carb-heavy meal, monthly hormonal changes and certain medications. Any of these, as well as other factors can cause fluid retention, which will lead to weight gain.

So don’t get on the scale and be mad at yourself for that pound or two (or three) increase. I know it’s easy to say and difficult to do! Been there!

“…using a scale has its place in determining how you’re progressing. However, I don’t recommend using the scale as your only source of feedback.”

Instead of depending on the scale, my suggestions to you are to take body measurements to find out if you’re losing inches, have someone help you calculate your body composition measurements, or even simply by noting whether your clothes feel looser.

Also, ask yourself – Do I feel stronger? Am I able to do that exercise I couldn’t do last month? Do I feel better overall? Do I have more energy and feel less stressed? These are good progress indicators that matter when you’re trying to improve your health and fitness level.

The scale can be a guide to make sure you stay on track but don’t let gaining a couple pounds derail the progress you’ve made. Just be sure that, overall, you’re eating healthy foods and exercising. Consistency is the key!

As always, please let me know if there is anything I can help you with as you continue on your fitness journey. 🦋
