The Benefits of Having Meaningful Goals
Aug 06, 2020A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to flip a tire while waiting for a fitness class to start. I had wanted to try it for a while and was excited about the chance to do so.
When I had it about a quarter of the way up, I thought, “this is a lot heavier than I thought it would be.” I really had to dig in to move it. It was a great personal accomplishment, and I was pretty proud of myself.
I’ve realized that, since the quarantine began, there has been a distinct lack of fitness goals in my life. Although I’m back taking exercise classes, and enjoy these and love the people I’m with, I’ve discovered I need a personal challenge so I can work toward it.
A couple of weeks ago, I recalled one of my clients’ long-term goals. It’s a huge goal, one with multiple aspects to it. It’s going to take many months of effort to accomplish.
If I’m going to train her so she can achieve her goal, I need to be able to do it myself. So in an instant, her goal became my next challenge. It excites me and scares me at the same time.
Fitness-related challenges can teach you so much about yourself, including your perseverance, patience, and mindset. It’s important to challenge yourself and work toward personally meaningful goals. That could be participating in an activity you enjoy or training for a marathon. It all depends on what’s important to you.
It is also critical that you have people around you who will support you and help you achieve your goals. If you think I could be helpful in any way, please let me know. As for the progress I make in my new goal, I’ll keep you updated!
